Rock Wall FAQ
Q: How old do I have to be to rock climb?
A: Although we do not have an age requirement, we do recommend that children be at least seven years old in order to ensure they enjoy the physical and mental demands of climbing. If you think your child would enjoy climbing at a younger age, please call to schedule a trial. For safety reasons, children need to fit properly into our climbing harnesses. If your child is too small to fit safely in a harness, he or she will not be able to climb.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Please wear comfortable, athletic clothing and climbing shoes or sneakers. Pants are preferred. If you have long hair, be prepared to tie it back.
Q: Do I need to be physically strong to climb? Will climbing help me get in shape?
A: More than physical strength, climbing is primarily a sport of coordination, balance, and mental determination. Climbing is an excellent anaerobic workout that builds muscle and enhances core strength.
Q: Do you supply climbing gear?
A: Yes, Sono Field House provides all necessary climbing gear (harnesses, carabiners, and belay devices) free of charge during all of our climbing programs. We do have a small supply of climbing shoes (in limited sizes), so please bring your personal climbing shoes or closed-toe sneakers for comfort.
Q: If I own my own climbing gear can I use it?
A: If you choose your own climbing gear, SFH Adventure Area staff will need to inspect the equipment to ensure it meets our safety guidelines and criteria.
Q: Do I have to be a SFH member to climb?
A: No, you do not need to be a SFH member to climb.
Q: I’m an experienced climber. Can I belay at Sono Field House?
A: Yes, provided that you are at least 14 years of age and can successfully complete a belay certification assessment, you can belay other climbers during any of our “Belay-On” climbing programs. If you do not have previous belay experience, you can sign up for a Climbing: 101 program and learn to belay with one of our experienced instructors.
